Hypertension

Stroke is the number one cause of disability and third leading cause of death (after heart disease and cancer) worldwide. Stroke provides a large health burden for the disabled and their families. Economic burden caused by stroke is also so heavy. Hypertension is a risk factor for stroke, the most important and consistent.

Hypertension is one of the major diseases in the world, at nearly 50 million people in the United States, and nearly 1 billion people around the world. The prevalence of hypertension increases, in accordance with age. Someone called the have hypertension if their blood pressure more than 140/90 mmHg, or more than 135/85 mgHg in individuals with heart failure, renal insufficiency, or diabetes mellitus. Hypertension is a risk factor for stroke and coronary heart disease is the most consistent and important. Hypertension increases the risk of stroke 2-4 times as much, not depending on other risk factors.

For over three decades, various associations of health professionals across the globe are working hard to improve prevention and better treatment for hypertension. This work involves campaigns for the public to be more careful of hypertension. High blood pressure awareness campaign is a huge problem.

This is primarily due to high blood pressure causes no symptoms/complaints. A complaint occurs when target organ damage has occurred, and if that happened we were late step in managing hypertension. Large-scale epidemiological studies have shown that the number of people with hypertension worldwide has reached 1 billion, with mortality from diseases associated with hypertension reach 7100 thousand people die each year from diseases associated with hypertension (such as stroke and heart disease).

New Ways to Treat Mesothelioma Patients

Although mesothelioma is an irreversible illness, there is always hope. Several new mesothelioma treatment approaches are being currently researched and tested. In addition, researchers are improving on traditional treatments and therapies. These include:
  • Angiogenesis and Anti-angiogenesis Drugs - are used to block the growth of cancerous tumors by preventing them to form new blood vessels.
  • Immunotherapy - boosts the immune system to fight cancerous cells from the body.
  • Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) - improves local control of mesothelioma.
  • Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) - use of photosensitive drugs to expose the cancerous cells. A laser light is used to activate the photosensitizing agent, cells absorb the light, and an active form of oxygen destroys the cancerous cells.
  • Gene Therapy - to replace genes that are responsible for tumor growth with a copy of a normal gene.
  • Alternative Treatments and Medicine -eastern medicine, herbs, message therapy, acupuncture and more.
If you are interested to learn more about these new mesothelioma treatment approaches, please speak with a mesothelioma specialist and after, contact our Mesothelioma Law Firm to learn how we can help you obtain financial compensation to cover for all your medical costs.

Treatment Options for Mesothelioma

There are several options for treatment of mesothelioma. Which treatment, or combination of treatments depends on factors such as: location of the cancer; stage of the disease; patient age, general health and personal circumstance. 'Standard' cancer treatments include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. These treatments are often combined.

Surgery
Surgery is a common treatment for mesothelioma, removing part of the lining of the chest or abdomen and some of the tissue around it. For cancer of the pleura (pleural mesothelioma), removal of a lung may be performed in an operation called a pneumonectomy. Sometimes removal of part of the diaphragm may be required, depending on extent of spreading of the cancer.

Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy, or radiotherapy, involving use of high-energy rays to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors may be used. Radiation therapy aims to attack the cancer cells in the affected treated area. The radiation may be administered externally from a machine or by introducing radioactive materials through thin plastic tubes directly to the area where the cancer cells are found - this is known as internal radiation therapy.

Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy uses anti-cancer in order to attack and kill the cancer cells. These anti-cancer mesothelioma drugs are administered by injection directly into a vein.

Paracentesis
The symptoms of mesothelioma can be painful and are caused by a build up of fluid in the chest or abdomen. A procedure may be recommended to drain this fluid and help reduce these painful symptoms. This procedure of removing fluid from the chest is called thoracentesis. Removal of fluid from the abdomen is called paracentesis.

New Treatments for Mesothelioma
There have been ongoing clinical trial sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to find new and more effective treatments. This process allows doctors to determine how safe and effective these new treatments are before recommending them to other patients. Participation in clinical trials is an option that may be offered to patients with mesothelioma. Your doctor will advise if this is appropriate.

Treatment Side Effects

For the most part, cancer patients will often claim that symptoms associated with cancer treatment can be even more difficult to bear than those caused by the cancer itself. Mesothelioma can be an extremely difficult cancer to manage and treatment side effects are often severe. For this reason, we’ve assembled a number of resources for our visitors describing some of the more common side effects in detail. We’ll let you know about side-effects associated with certain treatments, as well as resources and community organizations available to assist you.

Pain Management & Dependency

Pain management is an important component of a mesothelioma patient care plan.  Learn more about assessing, tracking and managing pain as well as how notice and handle pain medication dependency.

Pain Clinics

Pain management clinics are located in many of the major cancer centers in the United States. They are designed to help those diagnosed with cancer, like mesothelioma, to learn effective pain management and coping strategies so that they may experience greater comfort and peace of mind.

Sleep Disorders & Sleep Apnea

Sleep "disturbance" can impede the effectiveness of mesothelioma treatment in asbestos cancer patients. Learn more about sleep disorders and other issues that cancer patients face as well as helpful resources in your area that can assist with treating them.

Patient Hair Loss Resources

Hair loss is a common side effect of chemotherapy treatment. Our hair loss resource directory provides access to companies that specialize in wigs and wig alternatives for cancer patients.

Cachexia and Anorexia

Unfortunately, different cancer treatment regimens are associated with loss of appetite and, in severe cases, malnutrition and wasting disorders. Learn to recognize the signs of these disorders and where to find help if you begin experiencing them.

Chemo Brain

Chemotherapy is associated with a number of side effects, but lesser known are the effects of chemotherapy regimens on mental capacity- specifically memory. Chemo brain is a memory and cognitive disorder experienced by many patients undergoing chemotherapy. Learn more in this section.

Flu Vaccinations

The immune function can be compromised in mesothelioma cancer patients. For this reason, it is important to take precautions to guard against infections from the flu and other viruses which can exacerbate cancer symptoms. One way to do this is to receive a flu vaccination each year.

Cancer Intimacy Issues

Cancer patients who maintain physical intimacy throughout the diagnosis and treatment phases of the disease can experience significant emotional and physical benefits. Learn about the challenges that cancer patients may face in the area of sexual intimacy and how they can be overcome.

Researchers Assess New Cancer

For mesothelioma patients whose cancer has not responded to chemotherapy, researchers are looking at new options to control the aggressive cancer. One new experimental treatment involves the drug IMC-A12, an anti-body that disrupts the process that is believed to cause cancer cells to grow and divide.

Researchers at the National Cancer Institute are recruiting mesothelioma patients for a clinical trial to determine the safety and effectiveness of IMC-A12 for treating patients whose cancer has continued to spread after undergoing chemotherapy. IMC-A12 is experimental and has not yet been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer of the lining of the lung and abdomen caused by asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma is famously resistant to treatment. Platinum-based chemotherapy is the standard treatment for advanced mesothelioma, but not all patients respond to it.

New treatment options are needed for patients with advanced mesothelioma that is inoperable. Researchers are studying the insulin-like growth factor axis as a pathway to arrest the growth and spread of malignant tumors including mesothelioma.

Type I insulin-like growth factor (IGR-1R) is important for cell growth and division. The drug IMC-A12 blocks the receptors in cells that respond to insulin-like growth factor. The theory is that may block the growth of mesothelioma cells, checking the spread of malignant tumors.

The clinical trial is recruiting patients who have been diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma or peritoneal mesothelioma that cannot be removed surgically

Patients enrolled in the study will receive IMC-A12 every three weeks and will be evaluated before the start of each new cycle of treatment with blood tests and imaging studies. The treatment will continue as long as needed.

The incidence of mesothelioma has increased in the last two decades. Approximately 2,500 to 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed in the U.S. annually. Most are workers and veterans who inhaled asbestos dust in the workplace decades ago. Asbestos exposure is an occupational hazard of some jobs, increasing the risk that workers will develop mesothelioma. Symptoms of mesothelioma typically appear 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos.
